Wide Asleep – Research Essay

So this is a research essay for a game-for-change game, I had to design during my Game Design Course. I decided upon a sleeping app that added gamelike elements to promote better sleeping habits and alert users of potential health risks associated with poor sleep. This was done with a good friend who designed all the images. I don’t know if I still have all the files but it looked really good in my opinion.

Vertigo Group :: Unnamed Stealth/ Action Game Analysis

jesyikaturner:

This concept art piece uses as an inspiration the theme of nature fighting back against technology. The whole, nature overgrown on broken, deserted human buildings. That was ditched in favour of instead of nature fighting, its working together with the man-made structures to create new biological buildings which the advanced humans live in. The buildings in the picture are the old buildings that are the remnants of the old civilisation. In a way, nature is still overtaking the buildings but rather than destroying it to go back to its root, its improving it and evolving it to something new. The purple pods in the background with the windows are the result of the technology and nature merge.

3D Character and Animation :: Bandages – Google Drive

jesyikaturner:

In this assignment we had to design a LoL character, model them, sort out the UVs, texture, rig, fix the skin weights and animate.

I ran into a fair few issues: the character’s center of gravity was off in the model sheet. I didn’t efficiently UV the character leaving a lot of wasted space which could’ve been used to make the textures more detailed. The skin weights weren’t done correctly meaning the model had a lot of skin distortion when animated. Plus I ran out of time when it came to animating and finalising the textures.

Narrative Exploration :: Silent Hill 3

jesyikaturner:

The psychological horror Silent Hill 3 was developed by Team Silent and published by Konami in 2003. The game’s story follows the plot of the first Silent Hill game. Silent Hill 3 uses the Voyage and Return story archetype as written in “The Seven Basic Plots” by Christopher Booker along with occult references with symbolism of birth and memories of the protagonist’s past life to construct a compelling narrative.

Formal Properties of a Video Game – Silent Hill 2

One of the first essays I had to do for my Game Design course. I think I got a fairly good mark with decent comments. I’m pretty sure one of the criticisms for this was that it read more like a review at the beginning rather than an exploration of the game’s mechanics. Anyways enjoy 🙂

Wide Asleep

jesyikaturner:

Having a good sleep pattern is an alarming issue for most people with 90% of Australians suffering from some kind of sleep disorder during their lives.[1] Lack of sleep is linked with motor vehicle accidents, medical & occupational errors, disasters and a wide variety of health risks.[1] [2]

Wide Asleep is designed to alert users of their poor sleeping habits/ cycles visually via the use of a digital pet. As well as monitor the user’s sleep and show them any potential sleeping disorders that might be keeping them from getting a good nights rest. It will offer the user different methods to improve their sleep hygiene.[3]
